The recent Yiddish Mental Health conference in Williamsburg, arranged by the Satmar kehillah, was attended by over 1,000 people, generating tremendous impact.
The goal was to raise awareness in three areas. Firstly, the event aimed to raise awareness about mental health, stressing that even people in the community are struggling with these challenges. With this awareness, family and friends will have an easier time recognizing when someone close to them is suffering and help them reach out for assistance.
The second pillar of awareness focused on providing a deeper understanding of what mental health conditions are, including breaking down diagnoses and identifying symptoms.
Finally, the conference addressed the question of what help is available for those with mental health challenges.
Hamaspik’s Sipuk clinic and Comfort Health played key roles in the discussions. Mr. Wertheimer addressed the audience with his trademark passion and compassion, describing what it’s like to live with the three most common mental health conditions our community — depression, anxiety, and trauma.
As a take-home gift for conference attendees, Hamaspik created a magnificent booklet of Yiddish Mental Health Diagnoses columns printed in the Loop, Hamaspik’s employee magazine. Participants were amazed at the sheer breadth of information now available in Yiddish, and it’s currently in it’s third printing. Hamaspik of Kings County continues to stand at the forefront of mental health in the community, addressing vital issues and literally save lives every day.
